Bike Parking Matrix

Good morning, I'm passing around the bike parking Matrix I had originally composed in March (again). For some reason the version that has been circulating didn't have vendor info on it. I found the original file, it is in MS Word and is quite large (7MB) so I've converted it to .pdf to make the file size more manageable (420K). If you want to make changes to the document let me know and I'll find a way to make it available to you. I would most like to put this on the web, either as a Google doc or html. Bike racks

David, In response to your request for information on bike racks for installation at bus stops, please find attached, 3 files produced by the Bicycle Board Commuting Committee. The file, 2008_BikeParking_LoRes.pdf provides a matrix that facilitates selection of bike parking options based on quantity of bicycles accommodated and length of time it would be appropriate for bikes to be left in them. The file, BikeParking.pdf provides some more options and price ranges. I'm hoping Nick Hein can come through with vendors for the options in these two files. The file Morgantown-Parking-Plan.doc is a work in progress that is incomplete and not yet seen by the Bicycle Board but provides important considerations when selecting bicycle parking facilities. This is for your information only and not ready for public release. The Commuting Committee has done an excellent job assembling this info and deserves gratitude from the Bicycle Board as well as the community. Frank

My experience doing this with similar groups of our size is that it usually takes a lot longer than the 90 minutes that I have allocated to it. If we can at least identify a top priority problem, discover its root causes and identify some effective solutions, I think we might get on a roll again. If you were to review the compiled results of our homework assignment and give some thought to which problems are most important, why we have those problems and what would be optimal solutions, we might be able to make better use of our time come Thursday. Right to the road

Homework

Bike Board Members, It seems to me the biggest obstacle is engineering. It very much reminds me of the difficulty with bus shelters. They were never considered when public spaces were designed and engineered, meaning there is no public property to locate them (no adequate public property for bike lanes), no accommodation for their use such as curb cuts (no consideration of how bikes and cars could interact in places with steep grades), and no awareness or interest on the part of designers and engineers to include them in new projects (the new streetscape in Downtown Morgantown gets us both I think). Without engineering, we don't have a product. Without a product to sell, we have little to offer, to market, to educate, or to encourage use. Without a good initial product for show and tell, it is a hard sell. Before there was any streetscape in downtown Morgantown, Wall Street was redone. Although small, it spurred imagination, created interest, and demonstrated what was possible. 15 years later, downtown streets are being redone. The first piece of the rail-trail was 150 feet long. Again, it demonstrated to the community what "could be" and helped people to imagine more (Hazel Ruby-McQuain's interest and financial support certainly helped as well). Perhaps we need a Demonstration Project? Probably one of the best candidate locations is outside the City of Morgantown. Granville is interested in re-developing their main streets and sidewalks and would serve as a great demonstration project. Is there a similar opportunity in Morgantown? David A.
