Bicycle Board Members,
Thanks to Don Dickerson, Hugh Kierig and Aira Burkhart for meeting with Bill
Austin and me to develop a plan for the September 15 ride with
representatives from WV's 7 MPOs, the WVDOT and WVDOH.
The MPO Conference venue will be the Hotel Morgan. We recommended Marilla
Park for the picnic. I recommended that Bill contact Ralph Larue,
larue(a)boparc.org about renting the park and getting a beer permit.
We recommended that the ride proceed from the Hotel Morgan …
[View More]up Monongahela
Blvd. to Patteson Dr., over University Av., down Campus Dr., across
Beechurst to the rail trail and the rail trail to Marilla. Attached is a
cue sheet. (Can anybody put this on a map?)
I agreed to check with Chip about conference attendees that don't bring
bikes to rent them from him.

Bicycle Board Members,
Thanks to Paul, Chet, Hugh, Derek, Don Spencer, Chip and Alice for feedback
on the letter.
Attached is a revision that addresses their recommended changes. Chip
suggested that I wait until there are more cyclists on the road so I'm going
to wait and ask the DP to publish it on March 14.
Thanks again for your work on the Bicycle Board.

Bicycle Board Members,
What do you think of my sending the attached letter to the Dominion Post?
I'm going to ask them to make it a separate column but it might end up just
being a letter to the editor.
I'd like to send it before the end of the week so I'd appreciate your
earliest reply.
Trail Closure Diverts Bikes to Boulevard
Now that MUB has closed the Rail Trail more bicycles are using Beechurst,
Mon Blvd. and Don Knotts Blvd.
The law gives bicyclists the same right to the road as motorists. It also
requires us to obey the same rules. If bicyclists drive their bicycles as
vehicles and motorists treat cyclists as drivers of vehicles, everyone
should fare well.
The law also requires drivers to give safe space when passing: at least 3
feet; more when the motor vehicle is going much faster than the bicycle, for
example climbing the hill on Mon Blvd.
The City is negotiating with WVDOH to install a bike climbing lane on the
east shoulder of Mon. Blvd. between Eighth St. and Evansdale Dr. but we
won't see that for a while.
Please treat bicyclists as drivers of vehicles but remember some may be
going a bit slower with the spare tire they picked up over the winter.

Oh, and Frank, any emphasis on shoulders on bridges isn't because we're
trying to "shoo" bicycles onto the shoulders on bridges, it's just that we
realize shoulders are an "escape" if the bicyclist is crowded or something
goes wrong on the bridge while the bicyclist is mixed in with motorized
traffic.

Bill,
I checked with the Morgantown Municipal Bicycle Board and the Country Roads
Cyclists bicycle club. Nobody knows of any planned events that will be
using any of the three bridges.
Can you say when work will be done on these bridges? If we knew when the
bridges would be unavailable, we could plan alternative routes. I ride over
the Basnettville bridge approximately 12 times each year. Approximately, 4
times, I'm leading a club ride that usually includes 3-8 cyclists. If I
knew when that bridge would be out, I could reschedule the rides or find an
alternate route.
Since the work summaries include descriptions of the shoulders, I'm
wondering if you wanted feedback on that. Shoulders are important for
pedestrians and the wider the better. For cyclists, shoulders, particularly
where the shoulder doesn't continue are typically not used. I would caution
against enticing cyclists onto the shoulder when they might have to swerve
back onto the roadway. Approximately 6.5% of all bicycle/motor vehicle
crashes (http://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/ped_bike/docs/ctanbike.pdf) where caused
by the cyclist swerving or turning left into the path of an overtaking motor
vehicle. If you wouldn't send a motorcycle or other motor vehicle down the
shoulder, it's probably a good idea not to send a bicycle down the shoulder.
Cyclists fare best when they act and are treated as drivers of vehicles.
Is this useful to you? I hope I was able to give you what you need. Please
don't hesitate to contact me to discuss this or other bicycle matters.
Thank you for giving bicyclists consideration in these projects as well as
all your work.

Frank - I like the idea of sending the letter. My one suggestion would be
to change the reference of the climbing lane from "east side" to "hillside"
or "opposite the river" - something that even the geographically challenged
might understand. Thanks for writing it!

The law gives bicyclists the same right to the …
[View More]road as motorists. It also
requires us to obey the same rules.

Bicycle Board Members,
Thank you for your prompt votes for the logo. As of 10 am Saturday morning,
we have a conclusive majority of votes for B. We will proceed with it.

Please reply: A or B.
Attached are two files: A and B. They …
[View More]show two logos. Please reply and say
which one you favor.
Thanks to Aira, Chip, Eleonore Jones and Gary Rodosta for working so
diligently to make a logo. We've arrived at two and need to decide on one.
The key difference between the logos is the representation of the bicyclist
but the font style and other graphics including the "M", the skyline, the
shading, etc. are all factors that we've considered.
Please reply just to me. I will tally the vote. If there's a tie, I will
select by flipping a coin.
Keep in mind that the logo will be used on anything we produce from as big
as billboards to as small as correspondence documents and in media including
web site, facebook, twitter, billboards and paper.
Voting will be open until next Thursday.
