BB folks,
Lisa Mardis requested that I forward her email below. She is requesting
that at least a few BB members show up to a May 8th Planning Commission
Meeting and/or May 21st Board of Zoning Appeals Meeting to show support for
the VFW project that aims at installing 100+ bicycle parking spots due to
B4 zoning in a development on the property.
Please place this on the agenda, so we can determine who supports the
project and who will attend one or both meetings.
Thanks,
~Derek

Bike Board Members,
I vaguely remember Jonathan Rosenbaum mentioning the My Bikes program.
Today, Mmy wife recommended that I send this to the Bike Board in case you
wish to be involved or are involved in this. Please consider attending the
My Bike Program event that creates adaptive bikes for children and
adolescents.
Thanks,

Hello clinical team,
I would like to take a minute to introduce you to an upcoming opportunity
that HealthSouth MountainView has been given, in assisting pediatric and
adolescents with special needs to receive individually custom/adapted
bicycles through a program offered by Variety, the children's charity.
The "My Bike" program provides bicycles to qualifying families
and information is shared on the attached fact sheet. The program has been
so successful in PA, that the "My Bike" program has now been launched in
West Virginia. HealthSouth MountainView is looking forward to presenting an
in-service about this program at the date/time indicated on the attached
flyer.
In addition as a recognized local provider of Inpatient and Outpatient
Pediatric rehabilitation, we hope to become a local "fitting" location for
children who will be receiving these adapted bicycles.
PLEASE encourage pediatric team members, out-patient staff and all case
managers to attend this in-service to learn more about how easy it is to
provide the joy of recreation to children with special needs in West
Virginia.

West Virginia University and the greater Morgantown area have submitted
a letter of intent to be the first joint National Safety Council “Safe
Community.”
Morgantown and WVU would join nearly 30 towns in the country by becoming
a “Safe Community.” It would the first designated “Safe Community” in
West Virginia and the first joint “Safe Community” between a university
and a town.
Safe Communities America, a …
[View More]program of the National Safety Council,
exists to promote safety and well-being in towns across the country.
They bring businesses, civic organizations, local government,
non-profits and residents together to build a safer community for all to
enjoy.
WVU President Gordon Gee and city and county officials signed a letter
today (April 14), committing to the submission of an official
application within the next year.
“The value added of a University devoted to the well-being of the town
and state where it lives is among the most important callings of a
university, particularly one designated by its mission as a land-grant
university,” Gee said. “This is another step in West Virginia University
and the Morgantown community working more closely together.”
According to a study by the National Safety Council, these “Safe
Communities” lower fatal injury rates by a significant amount, with an
average 10 percent reduction of intentional and unintentional injuries.
“We are all working toward the common goal of improving the quality of
life for our community members,” said Colleen Harshbarger, director of
the WELLWVU Office of Wellness and Health Promotion and co-chair. “The
successful ‘Safe Communities’ process will not only result in better
outcomes related to safety and well-being, but will also form lasting
collaborative relationships. There’s so much talent in Greater
Morgantown, I believe we will make great strides in our common goals by
bringing people together in a way that will benefit all.”
Becoming a “Safe Community” will give Morgantown and WVU access to
various benefits, including programs to evaluate and improve current
injury prevention, funding opportunities and national recognition,
Harshbarger said.
As a part of the application process, the group will be collecting
injury data that can be used to collaborate and share with others. It
will also continue collaboration between the City and University and
improve or create programs to address injury patterns and trends in the
community.
A group of faculty, staff, community members, state and city
representatives began to meet last fall to discuss the opportunity of
becoming a Safe Community.
After completing the application within the next year, a visit to review
the greater Morgantown area will take place before it can officially be
considered a “Safe Community.”
“I believe the ‘Safe Communities’ initiative is a great example of the
City and WVU working together on safety issues and solutions in our
area,” said Marti Shamberger, deputy mayor of Morgantown and co-chair.
“The public will benefit from the preventative measures learned from the
information collected.”
Morgantown Mayor Jenny Selin said this is another great example of
town-gown partnerships at work.
“It will benefit all the entities involved by identifying and promoting
current best safety practices throughout our area,” Selin said. “We
often have expertise in our area, through WVU, one of our hospitals or
other public institutions, or private businesses – this certification
process allows us to gather and harness these best safety practices for
use in our own community.”

Who wants to contact Alex Hyde-Wright, Boulder County Assistant Transportation Planner to find out how they are getting accurate bicycle counts by modifying their tube counter system that they've been using to count vehicles? Please see article at : http://www.dailycamera.com/boulder-county-news/ci_25581681/new-count-shows-…

Good article: http://www.bikede.org/2014/04/07/why-share-the-road-is-gone/
> Riding at the right hand edge of a travel lane is an invitation for cars behind to pass. That’s fine. But where a double yellow line also exists, it is very easy for a motorist to interpret the combination of the cyclist at the right hand edge of the lane and the double yellow line separating her lane from the lane of oncoming traffic as an invitation to pass in the travel lane. But on roads where the travel lanes …
[View More]are only 10 or 11 feet, this is a potentially catastrophic misunderstanding. The only way for a motorist to safely pass a cyclist when the travel lane is that narrow is to (at least partially) exit her travel lane (into the lane of oncoming traffic). - See more at: http://www.bikede.org/2014/04/07/why-share-the-road-is-gone/#sthash.o29qkBw…

Hi All,
We did not make progress on selecting a new Chair-person for the Bike Board
at our meeting on Thursday. I volunteered to facilitate the meeting next
month on 5/1, where that should be the focus of the meeting. Start thinking
of nominations and new members!
Thanks to Damien for taking notes last week. Please send them out when you
have a chance so anyone who was not able to attend can look them over and
get caught up.
Thanks,
Emily
