September Minutes / Outstanding Projects, October Meeting Postponed, Call for New Members

Hello Board! We had a lovely meeting in September. For a large part of that meeting, Frank facilitated a brainstorming session about our Bike Spine Network map. See minutes and detailed notes about that session attached. Send comments or corrections to the minutes to briankleary(a)gmail.com Chip and I decided to postpone our October general meeting at least one week, and we may end up canceling it altogether. In place of the general meeting next week, we urge you all to organize help advance some of the projects below. Perhaps you could even gather a subgroup and meet during our usual meeting time? 1) Develop the spine network review process (needs a leader) 2) Set a date and plan the sharrows / bike lane celebration (contact Chip) 3) Help draft the bike/ped facilities closure policy (contact me) 4) Explore areas of town underrepresented by spine network (contact Chip) 5) Help recruit new members to the board (contact me) This last one is vitally important at this juncture. We've graduated quite a few members over the past year and we are likely to graduate a couple more soon. We need an influx of new (or returning) members willing to spearhead projects and help keep our momentum. The MMMPO is about to hire a consultant for a bike/ped plan update and that will mean that A LOT of things will be asked of the board. If you have any ideas about how we can best grow (or keep) our membership, please send them my way! Maybe we need to have a recruitment fair? Maybe we should contact all the other boards and have a *Morgantown Advisory Boards Extravaganza* where we all work to fill our membership? Thanks! Drew -- *J.D. 9 out of 10 participants agree "Winter riding is fun" Not that I think we need to have a City program giving out studded tires in Morgantown, however, this attached report is a very interesting read. Weather definitely is a barrier to many people in the Morgantown area in their choice to go out bicycling. -Jonathan

2019-2022 Paving and Bike Projects

Good Afternoon, In reviewing the mapping from last night: https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1KdzWWW29ZXA3B4ZnTBQgb-ZWwJIHLJRa&… with the 2018-2022 Paving Plan mapping: https://morgantownwv.gov/DocumentCenter/View/1987/2018-2022-Paving-Plan-Map… I made general observation of potential bike facilities that could be installed with paving projects. That document is attached to this email. I also looked at the 2023-2027 data, and established the following Bicycle Board identified infrastructure routes in the City of Morgantown that will not receive planned improvements by Fall, 2027. These roadways/corridors are as follows: Fairfield Street Stafford/Western Connector Congress Eastern Connector Western Avenue Koontz Avenue to Mountaineer Station Dogwood Avenue Keyser/Braddock Connectors Maddison Avenue Twigg Street Leonard Street Hayes Street Carnegie Street Luckey Street Mountaineer Middle School connections Terrace Heights connections WVU connections WVDOH connections I will have more information at next month's Bicycle Board meeting. Read-ahead for Thursday's BB meeting

Dear Bicycle Board Members, We’ll finish Thursday’s meeting a lot quicker if everyone shows up already familiar with the map at https://drive.google.com/open?id=1KdzWWW29ZXA3B4ZnTBQgb-ZWwJIHLJRa&usp=shar… <https://drive.google.com/open?id=1KdzWWW29ZXA3B4ZnTBQgb-ZWwJIHLJRa&usp=shar…> . It shows a preliminary complete bicycle infrastructure for Morgantown. GO AHEAD. OPEN IT NOW! :) You’ll have to zoom in to see detail (click the + sign in the lower right corner). The map has 11 layers that you can turn on or off by clicking the check box beside each layer’s name. The layers are: - Proposed Climbing Lanes - Proposed On-Road Bike Routes - Unconventional On-Road (or in Parking Lot) Routes - Proposed Off-Road Paths / Trails - Unavoidable State-Owned Routes - Useful Points of Interest - Parking Mousing over the items in any lay that you’ve turned on will “light up” the items in that layer. If you’re like me, once you’ve explored the map this far, nobody has to tell you to dig deeper! You’ll find yourself zooming in and out and navigating around to see what’s all there. Then, when we all show up for Thursday’s meeting, we’ll be ready to start working together to make this a reality! Frank P.S. Drew spent countless hours creating this map starting last November after he, Chip, Jing and I worked on identifying bike routes to be signed. As you know, the BB has been working on maps, markings and signs for more than 10 years and this is the first look that expands beyond the roads and the rail trail.
