I took an action item from this Thursday’s (9/1) BB meeting to distribute the Pedestrian Safety Board’s 8/29 meeting minutes. They are attached. Drew attended the meeting and discussed many PSB activities that intersect with BB activities. For example: The PSB is alarmed by bicycling on sidewalks downtown and has particularly asked the BB to get Jimmy Johns delivery cyclists under control. See minutes for more. Dan Shook is heading up a WVU Safe Communities project that is intended to make Morgantown safer for walking and bicycling. The PSB is planning to meet with City Council to discuss pedestrian and bicycle priorities with new City Manager candidates. WVU installed a sign in the middle of the future Mon Blvd Bicycle Climbing Lane without getting permission from anybody. Amy Boggs with the Governors Highway Safety Program funded the printing of 3,000 ped safety flyers. We need to comment on the proposed alternatives for the Collins Ferry, University Av., Baldwin St. intersection. Bike Board: BFC Local Review () and September meeting

Hello Board and observers, First, I mentioned last week that the League has devised a new method of local review that is anonymous and less of a commitment. We can choose how we'd like to distribute this link. Please check it out here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/MorgantownBFC Any person who spends time in our community, including folks who worked on the application, can submit this survey. The League says we will not be penalized or rewarded for a large number or small number of responses -- we only stand to gain from more diverse input than we usually receive. They will likely use quality feedback to choose an award level, however. "This survey is to provide context while we are deciding an award level and to, hopefully, provide valuable feedback to you in your community’s Report Card and Feedback Report." Also, we've got a meeting next week as per usual. Please review the attached agenda and open action item list. We're shaking up the meeting format a bit this month -- there's less than an hour and a half of time scheduled. We will at least begin the process of budgeting our discretionary funds for 2016 at this meeting -- please think on this and come with specific thoughts on how we should appropriate the funds. Movers and shakers of cycling in Morgantown, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to all of you. Whether or not you filled in boxes and wrote verbiage for the document submitted on Tuesday, your past and present dedication and enthusiasm for cycling in our town gave us the content we needed to present a strong application for the League's 2016 bicycle friendly community award. This was truly a group effort! I have mentioned before that we need local reviewers to both vet the application, as well as to give the League a sense of cyclists away from those of us who fill out the boxes. If you weren't part of the document creation process and you have some time over the next few weeks, OR if you know of a few other folks you wouldn't mind asking to participate in the review process, please consider signing up at the link provided in the email below. The deadline is tomorrow at midnight. I don't think the time requirement will be very demanding, but I am not privy to the process. There is also an informal review process described below. I plan to distribute the link widely throughout the community, and I'll ask your help in dissemination when the time comes. First, I want to thank the Pedestrian Safety Board for allowing me to become a part of a great endeavor! Since I’ve gotten older with more aches and pains running is not on my list of activities I can do. I’ve adopted walking which provides many of the health benefits of running. Thank you! As the director of the WVU-Greater Morgantown Safe Communities Initiative one of my major efforts will be to connect all of the tremendous efforts in our community for the purpose of keeping us safe and healthy! My purpose is not to eliminate or render ineffective any group, individual or effort attempting to improve our safety and wellbeing. On the contrary, I believe our collective strengths make us stronger. I’ve primarily coached team sports in my life and the teams I could blend individual strengths together as one were usually more successful. The reason I’m rambling on about this is because during my first meeting with the Pedestrian Safety Board I became aware that some of our efforts were being addressed by other groups as well. I’m sharing the email below because as the WVU-Injury Control Research Center and Safe Communities Initiative held the Distracted Behavior Task Force meeting others such as the Pedestrian Board had the same vision. Also, I discovered today that WVU has a program, Heads Up! WV, that appears to be pursuing pedestrian/cyclist safety. So, as I continue forward in my role I think it would be neat if somehow all of us wanting to make a difference in our community can find an efficient way to pursue our common vision together. In August I have scheduled a WVU-Greater Morgantown Safe Communities Advisory Committee. I’ve attempted to identify individuals in the community that represent focus areas in a safe community network. In September, I plan to convene a much larger meeting of all of the partners that had previously collaborated on the Safe Communities Initiative which led to our national accreditation. Maybe at that time we can figure out how to work together to achieve the same goal. I had been in Morgantown and on this job for a very short time when we went through the accreditation process. Prior to the beginning of the last day of the accreditation team’s survey of us I had breakfast with Dr. Lee Smith, Director of the Mon County Health Department. I shared with him that I’ve seen many silos, pockets of excellence in the community. We just needed to get everyone connected. He smiled and said that those were ”cylinders of excellence”!
