Good evening, I came across this interesting link tonite. A study in Rotterdam showed that strict enforcement of speed limits on a ~2 mile stretch of roadway resulted in greenhouse gas emissions being lowered 15% with no investment other than enforcement. London, England got a similar reduction but it took congestion pricing, administration, increased buses, sidewalks and bike amenities to do so. Positive Spin has discount helmets

Good afternoon, Positive Spin just received a shipment of adult helmets yesterday. We now have them in all sizes from toddler on up. Through BikeTexas/Bell Sports we get these for $7/ea in quantity. If you know someone who needs a helmet, but can't pay retail price send them our way. We never turn anyone away for lack of money. We also don't turn anyone away for excess of money. If you need a new helmet, consider purchasing one of ours. If you pay more than the cost, it qualifies as a charitable deduction and will support our advocacy, recycling and education efforts (including purchase of more helmets). New Product - Pedalites

Good afternoon, I just came across this product on one of the science websites I read regularly. http://www.pedalite.com/ I thought the idea was brilliant, but once I looked up the price ($60 for basic pedals, no SPD or Look cletes) it occurred to me that you could do it more cheaply. We've just ordered a bunch of flashing red LED taillights for $1.20/ea (our wholesale cost) that you could clip to your shoes or sandals. I'll give this a try when they come in and report back. Autumn's Replacement

Jonathan, We also have an MHS student who has started volunteering again. He can make a compelling case, because he's foregone bicycling BECAUSE there wasn't a secure place to park. I just gave a presentation at WVU to a class of Sustainable Design students which included a survey of bike parking alternatives. I also found the LEED green building standard. My recommendation is that we make a laundry list of requirements, along with pictures of the options for implementing them. I'll pass on the slide I have that shows different types later today. Gunnar, I don't know about drawings or photos of the bike rack, but by way of description it was just a 6 space ribbon rack located in an exposed courtyard. It provided adequate theft and vandalism protection because it was in a high-traffic area, but was unacceptable exposed to weather and sun. I never saw a bike in it. By design guidelines it was of a type that would only be called short-term (storefront) duty. Long-term (all day) specs. require much better. NUTCD Chevron recommendations

The NUTCD recommendations to the FHWA concerning Shared Land Markings (Chevrons) can be found here: http://members.cox.net/ncutcdbtc/sls/slmtoncjan07.pdf Fortunately, Pittsburgh is one of the cities which has been allowed to install chevrons as a Federally approved experiment on State roads so we have a good example close to home. If you look at the NUTCD recommendations there is no mention of a requirement for signage. So I am wondering why the WV MUTCD committee thinks this is necessary? Also, if you look at the MUTCD site, http://mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov/knowledge/natl_adopt_2000_2003.htm , you will observe that WV accepted all the MUTCD except for part 6 "Temporary Traffic Control." The MUTCD, itself, recommends that signage not be overused in relation to road markings. WV DOH should be looking at what Pittsburgh is doing and what the NUTCD recommends, in fact, in WV's own TEP (Traffic Engineering Directive) at http://www.wvdot.com/engineering/Manuals/Traffic/TED/TED210.pdf it says "It should be emphasized that it is not the intent of such signing to convey the message that the roadway contains any feature, exclusive lane, or other characteristic specifically designed to accommodate a pedestrian, horse, or bicycle." -Jonathan
