March 9th DA Editorial: "Becoming bicycle-friendly in W. Va."

Hello all, Interesting editorial in the daily today: http://www.thedaonline.com/opinion/article_d832f04a-e5b5-11e5-af31-3be9088e… *"It’s almost impossible to ride a bicycle in Morgantown for reasons other than exercise. Choosing to walk is often faster and less taxing on one’s body than attempting to pedal uphill or navigate through dangerous streets and intersections. Though Morgantown may be the exception, other cities in West Virginia are adopting bike-friendly policies in order to promote healthier lifestyles and transportation alternatives."* I'd like to encourage anyone on our board to read and respond to this editorial as a letter to the editor. I would be interested in hearing any opinions you all would have regarding whether we should respond as the bike board in unison. This is a good opportunity for us to educate the university system on the realities of cycling in Morgantown. It's interesting: seems almost as if they wrote this specifically to provoke a response from us. Ride safe, Drew

David didn't have any figures the last time I talked with him. The other variable is the site prep (do we need a concrete pad, etc...) and that will be different for every shelter, which will probably require an on site visit with someone knowledgeable like David or Damien. SLM proposed to WVDOH?

Hi all, Can some please answer these questions for me or provide the last documents we provided to the WVDOH regarding our SLMs? *How many SLMs and BMUFL signs have we proposed to the WVDOH to install? * *How much of the total application budget will this take? * I need to figure this out, so we can determine how much money is left for the installation of bus shelters. WVDOH TAP Bus Shelter Analysis

Dave, Are we able to either have you look at ridership levels and placement of the bike shelters or would you be able to provide ridership data to help us choose which shelter locations to present the WVDOH? I'd like to just have the whole list ranked based on ridership levels to help with our decision making. I've attached a scan of locations you and I had discussed previously. If we can get this data or your recommendations based on ridership, I think we can take this to a Bike Board meeting to determine the locations we will recommend to the WVDOH. I've asked the Bike Board about how much money we'll have for the shelters. According to what we've written into the grant, we stated that: 12 Shelters to be installed: Construction $6000 Materials $68,400 *+Labor $6000* Total $80,400 Now this may not be exact as we've all discussed the possibility for other funding via adverstisements, and the number of SLMs and signs that we proposed to the WVDOH may have changed a bit. South Middle bike club contact?

Hi all, As part of my AmeriCorps work, I'm involved with Try This WV<http://trythiswv.com/>, a community health movement focused on knocking WV off the "worst health" lists. I was talking with Try This director Kate Long yesterday, and she is looking for another person to invite to the statewide Try This conference to be on a bike panel. I mentioned the South Middle bike club as a good example of a school bike club. Kate would like to invite the current teacher leading this club to the conference. Does anyone have contact information I could pass on to Kate for this? Try This is planning two conferences this spring/summer. The first is a regional meeting, and the second is the statewide conference.
