Gunnar, On the Positive Spin forum I posted a note about commuting on University Ave, and sideroads you can take to avoid the traffic. This is one way to share the info. Another would be to put up a web page of routes, with links to mapmyride.com maps. This might get kinda messy pretty quick though as everyone offers differing advice according to their skill, strength, traffic, time of day, etc. I'm wide open to suggestions. Bike Commuting buddy list is online

Good evening, As we discussed in tonite's meeting I've put a bike commuting buddy list up at the positive spin forum. You can get to it at this link. http://www.positivespin.org/forum I haven't put much down in the way of rules, I'm hoping you can give me some feedback before we release it to the world. You can read the list without joining, but posting requires that you be a member. Feel free to peruse some of the other topics too. Good morning, The Pittsburgh bike advocacy director just put together this list ranking major cities by commuting mode. A couple things jumped out at me right away.... 1) Cities that don't take an active role in promoting cycling get about .7% of commuters riding bikes. 2) Pedestrians make up a much larger portion of commuters than I expected. It might be more worthwhile to try and encourage walkers to bike, rather than drivers. Comments? Bicycle Friendly Community Award Application

Bicycle Board Members, FYI, today, I mailed the Bicycle Friendly Community Award application to the League of American Bicyclists. Thanks to Don Spencer for getting the Mayor, Ron Justice; the City Manager, Dan Boroff; and the Executive Director Greater Morgantown Metropolitan Planning Organization, Chet Parsons to sign the transmittal letter. We owe thanks to Don Spencer, Greg Good, Nick Hein and me for completing the preliminary application and then for getting input from Dan Boroff; Chet Parsons; Terry Hough, City Engineer; Phil Scott, Chief of Police and 3 of his officers; David Bruffy, Mountainline Director; Tom Arnold, Parking Authority Director; Ralph LaRue, BOPARC Assistant Director; Terri Cutright, Mainstreet Morgantown Director; and Stacey Brodak, Morgantown Convention and Visitors Bureau Director. In getting their input, we also educated them about the criteria for a Bicycle Friendly Community and began to establish a shared vision for it. Interesting Article - What can you do with an MPO

Good afternoon, I came across this article on one of the lists I read.... http://www.news-record.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070927/NRSTAFF/7092… It's about the education and planning efforts of Greensboro, NC residents and their MPO to increase bike/pedestrian transportation through "Share the Road" education. They specifically mention that their roadbuilding is underfunded so they need to reduce motor vehicle use to live within the available resources. Nick

Road I

Bicycle Board Members, Starting Saturday, October 20 and every Saturday through the winter, I will be delivering the League of American Bicyclists Effective Cycling Road I course 8:00 - 10:00 am in the Training Room at the Morgantown Public Safety Center at the corner of Spruce and Walnut. The complete Road I course takes approximately 9 hours. Therefore, I will be delivering the course in 3 week cycles. The class consists of lecture, parking lot exercises and road work. After each session, anyone who wants can join in a ride who's route, pace, etc. will depend on the participants and the weather. I have the training room reserved until 2 pm every Saturday so we can leave our civies there until we return from the ride. Every single penny of the fee goes to Effective Cycling Education in the Morgantown area. At the end of each year, any unused revenue will be returned to the participants.
