Frank, I agree this sounds like a great idea. The ward map is at this link: morgantown.com/maps/wards.pdf. From the 3rd ward could we go to Sabreton (Ward 6 - Betsy's stomping ground), then return on Richwood and University to Krepps Park (4th ward - no board members) I'm not sure we can work in the 5th Ward. It's on the North side of 705?! If we end up in Ward 7 we could ride to the end of Collins Ferry to connect with the rail-trail back to downtown. WVU Transportation Plan

WVU Transportation and Parking Plan Committee: As Chairman of the Morgantown Municipal Bicycle Board and on behalf of the Board, I praise your efforts to plan transportation and parking for the University. The Bicycle Board is chartered by the Morgantown Traffic Commission which advises the City Manager. The Bicycle Board recognizes and encourages your commitment to coordinate with the City. The Bicycle Board has developed comments on the WVU transportation and parking plan but has had insufficient time to review them with the Traffic Commission and the City Manager for their concurrence. However, comments and recommendations that we made on the Morgantown Metropolitan Planning Organization's Transportation Plan and that the City Manager and City Council accepted are equally applicable to the WVU plan. Specifically, every transportation and parking improvement must encourage rather than discourage bicycling and walking. The Board encourages WVU to analyze the economic as well as quality of life costs and benefits of the many recommendations contained in the plan and to use the results of these analyses to select recommendations for implementation. The Bicycle Board looks forward to working through the Traffic Commission and the City Manager with the WVU Transportation and Parking Committee to develop and implement improvements that maximize the economic and quality of life benefits to the University and our greater community. Frank, I'm in a bit of a quandry over your request. My committee members haven't had time to respond or assist in the presentation so what you are looking at is an unreviewed rush-job presentation because of the number of other things I'm trying to do. I can have a final version early next week. Tonite I can give an oral description of what will be in the recommendation. That will be 2 rings of horizontal-storage cabinets from either Bike-Gard or American Security. Each ring can accomodate 12 bikes, and costs about $1000/bike (not including shipping and assembly, site prep) The 2 sites would be 1) Hazel-Ruby Waterfront Park 2) An undetermined downtown location. The space requirement would be a circular area of 25' diameter. The Bike Tree company hasn't yet started US production (expected late 2007) and costs work out to about $2500/bike, making it more suitable for a bike-sharing network rather than public storage. An additional complication is that 2 of the vendors only returned my calls today. My apologies for not having final results sooner, it's the best I could do under the circumstances.
