Imagine your next MUB bill containing a flier promoting bicycle safety such as the attached. Last week, all Sunnyvale CA residents received this flier with their sewer and trash bill. Sunnyvale's City Council even passed a law against harassing cyclists. This is definitely a very low cost action to promote bicycling safety but would require the coordination of at least City Council, City Management, MUB and the Police department. Happy cycling! Hey folks, We haven't received any word on the the City of Morgantown's FY2014 Transportation Alternatives 'Enhancing Bicycle Signage and Facilities' application, but *the FY2015 WVDOH will begin accepting the Intent-To-Apply for projects is opening. * There is still the possibility that our FY2014 application could be funded, but in the event that it doesn't get funded,* I recommend we review our previous application, improve it, and resubmit.* We now have time to critique our work and hit a home run. *Who would like to be involved in the process again or for the first time this year?* I believe it would be valuable to have a few new eyes on the application, but also have some continuity in the folks from last year as well. In particular, I called the city about getting the shoulders of Mon. Blvd. swept, as the gravel and debris are gathering to pose a danger for those of us who need to use that route. I was told that the sweeper has been broken for a long time, and they were not sure if/when it would be fixed. The more the city hears about the need to take care of that, the better. South Bike Club

Dear Mgtn Bike Board, First, I want to thank the Bike Board for donating the bike rack this past school year to our program at South Middle. It was a welcome addition to the single rack that we had. The donated rack helped us manage the large number of bikes dropped off by families in the AM for their children to ride with the club after school. The South Bike Club had 78 active members this past school year. That is slightly over 10% of the entire South student population of about 750. We also have 7 teachers active and a partnership with WVU Science Behind the Sport. We rode at least once a month, except January (too much snow). Rides included South to Star City and back, a few rides on single track in White Park, South to Uffington Bridge and back and our annual field trip during the school day from Reedsville down Deckers and finishing at South (22 miles). Also this past year a former club member worked on an Eagle Scout project to improve South's bike parking. He designed and built a new bike pad behind the shcool installing two new racks and reconditioning the Bike Boards donated rack giving us the capability to park 80 bikes. We feel that we are the most bike friendly school in the county! Along with South, the Alternative Learning Center at Milam Park also has an active bike program. And this year, University High has a new faculty member who is well versed in all things biking--Ryan Stocking. And finally, South Bike Club is always in need. If there are any bikes that the Board knows of that are operable we usually have a few kids needing to borrow from the club. We currently have only two loaner bikes and every ride we must turn away a few kids who do not have a bike or whose bike is not in a operable condition. Also, we are always in need of $. We feed the children after each ride and we need to purchase equipment- tubes, helmets and such. If the Board knows of any businesses and / or indivduals who would care to help support in any way please have them contact me at mwthorne(a)access.k12.wv.us or at 304-777-7567 during school hours (7am to 2:30pm). I am again doing a fund raiser for the club. In October I run the WV Trilogy on Spruce Knob 94.1 miles in three days. I ask for $ per mile, so pass that on to anyone you think would be interested. Bike Board, I was realizing that the news section isn't very up to date and wondered if there is any interest from the Bike Board in making this page and the whole website more active if: (1) we currently get alot of traffic on it, or (2) we decide that we could push it out and make it more of a resource to the community. I wouldn't mind posting some stuff from time to time. Thoughts? The DP published our letter and a letter from Elaine Wolfe in response to Sam Stone's letter. She says bicyclists who can't keep up with traffic are foolhardy, selfish and rude. See attached copy of today's letter to editor. This may be an auspicious time for someone else to write a letter. Some things another letter might state: Bicyclists travel on roads for the same reasons motorists travel on roads. Motorists do not have a right to speed. Bicyclists are traffic. Bicyclists are motorists too. Collect on Wolfe's bet. Rail trail doesn't go everywhere people need to go. Frank D. Dear Bicycle Board members, Sam Stone's letter to the editor in yesterday's (Sun 7/13, p. 1-D) prompted me to write the following. Thoughts? > Byline: New Laws Governing Bicycling > > You must slow down and allow at least 3 feet when passing a bicycle. Bicyclists may ride in the middle of a narrow lane. These WV laws became effective last month. (17C-7-3, 17C-11-5) > > For decades, the law has said that bicyclists have the same rights as motorists and must obey the same laws. (17C-11-2) > > According to the American Association of State Highway Traffic Officials, a road must be at least 15 feet wide for a car to safely pass a bicycle without leaving the lane. None of the lanes around here are that wide. > > When overtaking a cyclist, wait until the road ahead is clear and change lanes to pass.
