Drew, et al, I agree with Frank's comments, It will help us measure our progress and as we learned with the last BFC application, the form itself is a prompt for what other top communities are doing. It has helped businesses recruit new employees, I was doing a presentation for the US Dept of Forestry office here, on what they could do to promote commuting to work and a new employee that had relocated from the Pacific Northwest commented in the question period that he had transferred to Morgantown because of the cities and the Forestry Offices BFC rankings. With the Alta plan it will be a lot easier to fill out the applications as they have quantified what our infrastructure is and what it will be with proposed improvements. A lot of things that were proposed on our last application have been completed. Finally, doing the applications might also help the bike board see how we will fit in with more involvement from the city. I think the City should apply for both BFC and PFB recognition. They provide an opportunity to measure and document progress which the City might not otherwise do. Indeed, the City has made substantial and steady progress. We have bike lanes; more people riding bikes for more reasons; tool stands at trail heads and we have a nationally recognized contractor (Alta/Stantec) making us a bicycle plan. Just to name a few. Implementing the new plan will take money. Being a BFC could help us get grant funds. Just seeing all the City's accomplishments wrapped up in one package can motivate citizens to get involved - provided the City promotes it well. Just this morning at a cafe, I asked a retired couple that bicycles if they think the City should apply for BFC renewal. They said, Yes! We feel so lucky that we can ride here and that we have found such a great community of cyclists to ride with! Learning that Morgantown is a Bicycle Friendly Community attracts people to want to live here." They moved here some years ago from the DC area. I can only speak for myself when I say that working on the previous applications with the great teams that we had and winning the awards made me proud. I hope others that worked on them will also respond to your request. Completing the applications should be easier than past applications since the new applications could probably be as simple as updating the last application. I think this would be a great project for the City to restart a Bicycle Board especially with so many Councilors and City Staff now promoting bicycling. I received confirmation today that our award does not expire until the end of 2020. This sets our application due date in August, not February. I have questioned the utility of the award in the past; I'd like to start a conversation about what value you all see in the award going forward - both in the application process and in the award itself. It is perhaps obvious to state that the application process requires significant energy from city officials and citizens. In return, we receive recognition, a report card that theoretically helps guide future efforts, and a summary of survey responses. Possessing BFC certification may also indirectly attract/retain certain populations to/in our area. Other tools exist to rate communities and give pointed feedback. Fw: HRM Bike Fix It Station

Hello Bike Board (or, rather, previous members of the bike board), As you can see below, our assistant city manager would like me to solicit feedback on repair stations included with the Hazel Ruby McQuain park renovations. They are currently planning to install one near bike parking on the walnut landing. Originally they planned to install two - the other was to be installed near bike parking close to the will call office (old bus depot). See the attached drawings for contextual information. Feedback please: 1) Are you okay with just one fix-it station? 2) If so, where would you like it to be located? Preferably this would be one of the two previously mentioned locations, but if you have strong opinions otherwise feel free to share them 3) If not, are you willing to spend monies in the escrow account slated for bike stuff around town to install the second? Alternatively, if you are willing to spend monies (we have ~$10.5K in escrow), but don't see the need for two fix-it stations in such close proximity, you could voice an opinion to install one somewhere else in city limits. They generally run b/t $1K-$2K. I heard recently that one was supposed to be installed at the new White Park parking area trailhead, but I am unsure of where that currently stands. The initial submission does not require us to select a final project, but it did provide space for us to indicate potential projects. Inflatable SUP, popped, free to good home

All-We learned the hard way that you shouldn't leave an inflatable stand up paddleboard in the sun to dry, even for a short time. It popped, ripping about a 6-8" split in the seem. We tried all sorts of boat epoxies, flex seal etc. to no avail. I'm about to put it at the curb for trash pickup tomorrow but thought somebody could use it, even scrap pieces, rather than I throw it out. Hello Everybody, First there is no meeting tonight. The room we usually use isn't available until the first of next year due to some renovations going on at the Public Safety Building. We need to find another place for meetings. In the past we have have used the library (sometimes it's hard to get a room and they close at 8), Panera Bread and Black Bear in Evansdale, and the Blue Moose (they are closing earlier now). Get your thinking caps on and come up with some ideas and also your thoughts on days that you can and cannot meet. It would be nice to get together next week. With signs and markings going down on the road we need to get back to looking at a map that is easily used from mobile devices, get a plan for posting on social media and doing social rides, look into partnering with a group to do some ongoing stations on commuter routes like boulders Pastries on the Path ( https://www.boulderfoodrescue.org/potp/ ). All, Happy National Bike to Work Week! This email contains info about quite a few upcoming bike events around town. Placeholder information about our local observance of Bike to Work Day is below. I'll try and get a flyer made ASAP unless one of you want to whip something up right quick? * Tuesday, May 20th - Morgantown Bike to Work Day at the Spruce Street Farmer's Market Pavilion, 7:30AM-9:00AM. The City of Morgantown and the Morgantown Bike Board will host this year's event in a new location and on a new day! Coffee and assorted pastries/muffins/foods will be available from 7:30AM - 9:00AM with a photo opportunity at 8:30AM. We are working with other local groups to establish a more regular bike commuter support/appreciation program similar to Boulder's Pastries on the Path<https://www.boulderfoodrescue.org/potp/>. We anticipate the first of these to be held in a few weeks on the Caperton Rail-Trail on the patio outside of Wamsley's Cycles / the Seneca Center - stay tuned. If you are interested in helping to host something like this in a location closer to your workplace or to your commute, please give me a shout! Other excellent bicycle-related events happening next week: * Monday (May 20th) - Regional Bike/Ped Plan Public Meeting at the Marilla Center<http://www.boparc.org/marilla-center.html> at Marilla Park, 6-8 pm. Rec Trail Grants- letter of support

Good morning Bike Board, I wanted to send you an update on grants I am submitting for this year’s round of Recreational Trail Grants. If interested in writing a letter of support for any or all of these- I can send you a draft. I would need by the end of this week if possible. Ella Under Mon River Trails Conservancy 1) purchase of maintenance equipment, 2) Mon River Trail resurfacing (Little Falls to Opekiska), 3) Deckers Creek Trail Undercut restoration (additional funds for repair just up from Krogers), and 4) Deckers Creek Trail repaving (1/2 mile from Greenbag Road intersection up past Kroger). Under BOPARC Engineering Design only- Forest Avenue Landslide on Deckers Creek Trail (in mile one) Under Star City Additional funds for the Caperton Trail and Rivers Landing Connector Trail This project is having a hard time meeting ADA requirements that the DOH is imposing on it. Plus the landowner (one of the Gabriel Brothers owners) is holding fast to not having it go on any of the Rivers Landing property (this is the location of CVS, Aldi’s, and Golden Corral). This means the entire project will be on DOH right of way under the Star City bridge and rail-trail property as it gets down to the trail. Dear Bike Board, It warms my heart to see the momentum you've generated in Bike to School Day activities. Many kudos to all you ride leaders, parents, and educators willing to take the helm! Due to the imminent PSB construction activities, major constraints are being placed on meetings in the training and conference rooms from now until the end of the year. In the typical bike board meeting time and place, there will be potential conflicts with court and other activities from June until at least December. Although it is not imperative, I highly recommend you all begin to explore another time and/or place that you could meet. The conflicts will be much more severe after WVU is back in regular session. I checked my rear view mirror as I slowed and started right. A bicycle, traving north/downhill in the bicycle lane at about 40 MPH, missed my bumper by inches. At first I thought the bicyclist was just reckless riding, but the more I thought about it I started to wonder if the bicyclist did not understand the proper use of the bike lane. Traffic was stopped in the northbound lane, obscuring the road markings for bicycles. This led me to the question: Do bicyclists think a bike lane is 2 directional, like the rail trail ? So I have a question for you. Are bike lanes clearly and frequently marked "Wrong Way" for those that are traveling the wrong way? Had this collision occured, it would have been very serious, probably fatal. Thanks for all the work you've done over the years to improve integration between bicycles and motorists. Hello everybody, I will be out of town tomorrow for the Bike Board meeting, but will be back next Tuesday. We need to get together to do plans for bike to work day. If you have been down by the riverfront park, you know that is a mess with construction going on. It would be nice to do a couple of locations, but with limited people, they would most likely have to be on different days. Put your thinking caps on and come up with some alternative locations. We might catch folks on the plaza by the public safety building as they are headed to campus, we could use the back deck of the Seneca center, possibly in front of the Grind.
