Dear Frank,
Congratulations! The League of American Bicyclists has decided to designate Morgantown as a Bicycle Friendly Community at the Bronze level. This decision involved careful review of your application and consultation with local cyclists.
As you know, this award is presented only to communities with remarkable commitments to bicycling. You should be very proud of this accomplishment. Please share this with your partners in the city and advocacy community. The League will be publicizing this nationally Monday, May 14th to coincide with National Bike to Work Week. We look to working with you to help promote this accomplishment and will be sending you a template for a local press release next week. We encourage you to create your own for local & regional media. Please hold your announcement of the award until May 14th.
You will also be receiving an award certificate, BFC road sign and feedback on what you can do to make Morgantown more bicycle-friendly in the next two weeks.
Your designation will be due for renewal in February 2016. At that point your community will be reevaluated so we urge you to make as many improvements as possible in the meantime! Of course, if you wish to renew sooner than that please do. We look forward to seeing the community’s progress.
If you would like to do an award ceremony, please let us know. We would love to work together to promote this great achievement. Also, we would like to promote the community on our website. We are asking you to provide a few new photographs that we can use to produce your community profile page onwww.bicyclefriendlycommunity.org. Please email those to nicole(a)bikeleague.org
Once again, accept our congratulations on your tremendous efforts to create a truly Bicycle Friendly Community.

Good Evening,
I would like to discuss the Bike Month events, promotions, outcomes and other topics finalized at the Bike Month Event meeting on May 2. I would like to give a general update, potentially provide links to data and flyers, and for comments and additional participation and sponsorship. (15 min)
And potentially discuss or mention to the members that the Bike Board should work in conjunction with the Pedestrian Safety Board to recommend 1 segment of road and 1 alternative segment …
[View More]to have a test study for video ped. and bicycle counts. (Bill may have already discussed this in my absence though. I will have to follow-up.) 2-3 minutes unless discussion
If I can think of anything else, I will let you know.
Thank you,

Subject: [Bikeboard] Agenda for next Thursday's Monthly BB meeting
Bicycle Board Members,
I usually send you a draft agenda the week before our regular monthly meeting but this month, I'd like to try something different. I've been thinking that the draft agenda is essentially a "box" and my transmission of it asks you to respond to what's in the box. Recently, I have observed declining member responses to communications and declining participation in board activities.
So, today, no box. Please reply-to-all and say what you would like the board to accomplish at next Thursday's meeting. Feel free to include any other information that might help the board to succeed in accomplishing your objective, e.g. how much time you'll need, members and resources you'll need, your approach, etc..
Hopefully, this approach will give you an opportunity to "think outside the box" and increase BB member participation.
The meeting will still start at 6:30 PM in the PSC Conference Room and I'd like to reserve about 10 minutes at the end for us to evaluate this approach.

Have you seen the new left turn lane and intersection widening WVDOH is installing at the western crossing of the rail trail with Deckers Creek Blvd? On October 18, I copied you on a message to Chris Fletcher, Roy Nutter and Bill Austin suggesting that this was an opportunity to make that crossing safer for cyclists. Does it look safer to you?
The subject of my October 18 message was Walgreen's new store that will replace Southern States. The salient point of my message was that this was an …
[View More]opportunity to improve the terrible sight line where the trail heading east crosses the road. On Dec. 26, a 10-year old bicyclist crossing there was hit by a pickup truck.
Recently, I learned from WVDOH that they're considering transforming the signalized intersection there to a roundabout. Walgreen has asked Damien to recommend bike racks and they're considering making a direct connection from their business to the trail.
Obviously, this is an opportunity for knowledgeable cyclists to get involved to improve the situation for cyclists or at least prevent increased endangerment. We already have recommendations in the Bicycle Plan for cyclist activated crossing signals and a raised intersection. (Wanna bet nobody thought of such at the other crossing?)
Several Bicycle Board members have expressed interest in the rail trail there (don't make me name you;) NOW, WHO'S GOING TO REPRESENT THE BICYCLE BOARD IN THESE PROCEEDINGS? Please reply-to-all ASAP and contact Christiaan about the Thursday 4/19 meeting.

Bicycle Board Members,
Attached is Terrence's weekly information letter to City Council dated April 20. In it, he highlights our plan and its upcoming presentation to City Council at its regular May 1 meeting. It was exciting to have BB members outnumber CC members at the last presentation. I hope we can repeat that at this meeting to show support for the plan as well as to help me remember what happens.

Perry,
I'm writing again in regard to bike/pedestrian access at WV857 on the Ice's Ferry Bridge during construction of the replacement bridge. First I want to thank you for permitting cyclists to cross during the Winter while construction was stopped. I've used the bridge just about every day, and have seen other cyclists and pedestrians using it as well. However, as I understand that construction will begin again on May 1 I would like to know if I can count on continued access across the …
[View More]bridge after that time. I would also like to know that if you give that assurance, it won't be rescinded or blocked by someone else in the department - as has happened in the past. I am particularly concerned because in the last Dominion Post article about the bridge closure the person speaking on behalf of the department appeared to be unaware that anyone had requested access.
I am concerned about this issue for myself, as I depend on this route to get to work and other activities in Morgantown every day. However, as a sustainable transportation advocate I am also concerned that bike/ped access to the bridge be maintained for everyone who needs it - as is required by law (unless a practical alternative route has been established).
I have cc'ed this message to the Morgantown Bike Board as many of them also use this route regularly.
Thank you.

Bicycle Board Members,
Who wants to lend your ideas/expertise on bicycles and cycling to help the public library make a visual display on bicycles and cycling for May?
We could at least provide them bumper stickers and police information cards. We could lend them the Same Roads, Same Rights, Same Rules banner if nobody's planning to use it for anything else. Perhaps the BikeMorgantown.com website including the Morgantown bike route, etc. could be worked into it as well.

I thought of you immediately, though, when I learned that this would be the theme of our display. I have a couple of ideas already, but I know that you are very knowledgeable about cycling, so I thought I'd ask you the favor: If you have a moment and something occurs to you that might be important to include on a display about bikes, could you drop me a line (no need to put an enormous amount of thought into this)?
