Dear BB members, I highly encourage you to attend this webinar next Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, 2:00 p.m. — 3:30 p.m. In it you will learn the FHWA's method for assessing roadways and other bicycle facilities for safety. Most of the BB's work involves us assessing roadway and other facility safety for bicyclists. This webinar can increase our competence at that. I have registered for it but when it is being conducted, I will be in the Navigating MAP-21 workshop in Charleston. I have missed previous webinars and watched the recordings later but they're not as good. So, I hope some of you will attend and tell us what you learned from it. I found this: http://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/ped_bike/tools_solve/fhwasa12018/ which is a comprehensive and excellent report on Roadway Safety Audits. It could be a valuable read-ahead for the webinar. As I agreed at our last BB meeting, I delivered a presentation on Safe Routes to School to the Green Team last Thursday. Please reply by Friday with any items you'd like considered by the Traffic Commission. I'd like to see a on what has been done or is being done to apprehend the motorist that struck a cyclist at the Deckers Creek crossing of Carnegie St in June. I'd also like a report on the Mon Blvd. Bicycle Climbing Lane. At the last TC meeting, I suggested that the TC discuss reorganizing and refocussing so that it actually accomplishes something. A substantive discussion ensued and Chairman Nutter said we would continue the discussion at the October meeting so I will also remind Damien that that should be on the agenda. Here's the info on the Green Team's Safe Routes to School meeting that Barbara Walker described at last week's BB meeting. I hope many BB members will attend because, as we learned in last week's SRTS webinar http://tinyurl.com/nuoably and as Matt Watson clearly demonstrated to us, engaging the middle school students with their parents' support will get SRTS done. At this 9/17 meeting, we will have the opportunity to collaborate with the Green Team and the Pedestrian Safety Board to understand and leverage each other's plans and ideas and increase our momentum to accomplish our SRTS plan.
