Nicole,
After careful consideration by members of the Morgantown Bike Board, we submit these photos for inclusion on our LAB BFC Community profile website.  If you need better quality or any changes with the photos, please let me know.
Thanks!

All,

I would hate for Traci’s work to go to waste, so I am happy to integrate what I can. Most community profiles should have pictures, but unfortunately we do not receive photos from all communities. We are usually looking for photos of your bike infrastructure (preferably with (helmet-wearing) cyclists in it, photos of community bike events, etc. Resolution >1 MB would be best.

All,

I did not understand that the LAB did the profile.  The info that Nicole quotes is directly from our application.  It is fine.  Looking at other city's profile on the LAB website, I don't see any photos.  Bill Nesper requested photos for the profile.  Now, I'm wondering if we could get some more guidance on the photos that LAB needs and where they will be used.  Since Traci spent so much effort drafting community profile, I'll defer to her judgement on what we think should be in Morgantown's community profile but I also understand that LAB has a standard "look and feel" and if Nicole chooses to go with the info that she sent us, I'm OK with that.

Derek,

Actually, I was told today that the profiles need to be done by tonight. If you like, you can send me what you have and I make it work for our format. We can always make further edits later, as the profiles do not need to be static. And yes, please send the photos as well!

Best,

Nicole

Traci and Frank,

Please see the email below from Nicole with the LAB.  I know several folks have already commented on the draft you've put together.  Are we at a point that we can forward her what we've typed up?

Nicole,

What would be the cut-off for delivery of the profile we're preparing?  We've also put considerable energy into photos for the profile and are selecting them right now.

Thanks,

~Derek

Hi Derek,

Thank you for your offer to help with the community profile. Usually we develop the profiles, but you are welcome to do the profile for Morgantown if you so chose. We would need a fairly quick turnaround though, as we are hoping to post the profiles early next week, preferably on Monday.

Usually we start out with a couple facts and answers directly pulled from the application. Then we edit it for content, flow, grammar, spelling and third person speak. Here is what we pulled for Morgantown (unedited):

Community:  Morgantown, WV

Type: New

Pop: 29660

Area: 10.2

Pop density: 2736 per / sq mi

Percentage of workforce bicycle commuting: 1%

Recent bicycling investment: Thousands of hours of effort and approximately $30,000 (20% City, 80% State) in the Confident City Cycling education program.

Three bicycling highlights:

The number one reason Morgantown deserves to be designated a bicycle friendly community is to keep the momentum going that our Bicycle Board has created. The last few years have shown improvements in infrastructure and education. Our new city manager is dedicated to implementing our comprehensive bicycle plan. We are at the tipping point for big changes and success breeds success.

it is already serving as a model for the rest of the state (twice achieving bicycle friendly state rank of 50). WV is almost always last in polls for positive state attributes, but Morgantown 's Bicycle Board has already established relationships with the state Department of Transportation that may change that. We need to show the state that making not only Morgantown but also other communities and the state bicycle friendly will yield benefits to the health of the population as well as drive its economy.

The third reason Morgantown deserves to be designated a bicycle friendly community is to provide an example for other communities nationally that are challenged by extreme geography and outdated infrastructure. It 's easy to get people on bikes in flat areas that have wide roads and room to build dedicated trails but a practically impossible task in an area like ours that also lacks a larger tax base. The out-of-the-box and creative ideas we implement can help communities with problems similar to ours.

Percentage of arterial streets with dedicated bicycle facilities: %

Bicycling education in % of elementary schools and % of middle schools

Signature cycling events: Appalachian Spring Spectacular has been held almost every year since the early 70s. Approximately 100 cyclists usually participate. It usually consists of 20-, 40- and 60-mile road tours but has also included mountain bike trail and back road rides. In recent years, the event has been the first Sunday in May and has been expanded to a 2-day event with the Saturday  bonus ride  a very challenging long road ride.

Some coming bicycling improvements: The Greater Morgantown Bicycle Plan, http://db.tt/2NaSlSZ4 lists more than 60 improvements for bicycling. The schedule for implementing the improvements depends on the annual City budget, which is variable, and on winning grant funding.

Best regards,

Nicole

To Whom It May Concern,

Morgantown, WV recently received the Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community award.  I am a Member of the Morgantown Municipal Bicycle Board and may help with creating the Community Profile.  Do you have guidance either online or something you could send us that would or may include templates, examples, data needed, guidance docs, etc for us to be able to understand what you like to see in a Community Profile... I suspect we already have most of this info, but would like to format it similarly to what other communities have submitted, if you'd like.

Thanks,

~Derek Springston
