All,
Happy National Bike to Work Week! This email contains info about quite a few upcoming bike events around town. Placeholder information about our
local observance of Bike to Work Day is below. I’ll try and get a flyer made ASAP unless one of you want to whip something up right quick?
- Tuesday, May 20th - Morgantown Bike to Work Day at the Spruce Street Farmer’s Market Pavilion, 7:30AM-9:00AM.
The City of Morgantown and the Morgantown Bike Board will host this year’s event in a new location and on a new day! Coffee and assorted pastries/muffins/foods will be available from 7:30AM – 9:00AM with a photo opportunity at 8:30AM.
We are working with other local groups to establish a more regular bike commuter support/appreciation program similar to Boulder’s
Pastries on the Path. We anticipate the first of these to be held in a few weeks on the Caperton Rail-Trail on the patio outside of Wamsley’s Cycles / the Seneca Center - stay tuned. If you are interested
in helping to host something like this in a location closer to your workplace or to your commute, please give me a shout!
Other excellent bicycle-related events happening next week:
-
Monday (May 20th) – Regional Bike/Ped Plan Public Meeting at the
Marilla Center at Marilla Park, 6-8 pm. Unlike the open-house style meeting in February, this one will be in a workshop format that includes break-out groups gathered around maps. After the initial slide presentation, the focus will be discussion of
the preliminary pedestrian and bike network recommendations (closing sidewalk gaps, proposed new mid-block crossings, intersection improvements, better access points to trails and on-street bikeways). Attached is a meeting notice/flier...please circulate
far and wide among your friends and colleagues!
-
Tuesday (May 21st) - Kids' Safety and Fitness Expo
at the WVU Student Rec Center Fields, 5-7 pm. This popular community event will include a Bicycle-Rodeo style activity for the young and young at heart hosted by Andrew Hoover of the WVU Science Behind Cycling. Additionally, members of the Regional
Bike/Ped Plan Update team will have a table and displays similar to the February open-house event. They’ll be available if you feel like talking about the project with event attendees or want to provide additional input to Alta/Stantec and/or MMMPO staff.
-
Thursday (May 23rd) – Return of the
Motown Social Ride Series at the Spruce Street Farmer’s Market Pavilion, 6-8 pm.
Meet at 6, ride at 6:30P, be back to the pavilion by 8P. Always a popular event – bring some water, a helmet, a bicycle, and some noisemakers! Like usual this is a go-slow, no-drop ride primarily on city streets with a special focus on cut-throughs and
whimsical routes through multiple neighborhoods.
Finally, this week is the
National Bike to Work Week and this Friday is National Bike to Work Day! Although we won’t be hosting anything special, we’d love to see a picture of you riding or your bike in your office, or anything else that you think helps capture the spirit
of this week. Send it to me or include the following hashtags on your favorite social media platform: #BikeMorgantown #biketowork #BTWD2019
Ride on!
