Derek, perfect timing on your part.  Approximately 12 hours ago we had a Bicycle Parking meeting.  One exciting outcome was the discussion with David Bruffy of Mountain Line Transit Authority about the process required to realize the placement of multi-use shelters that can accommodate bicycle parking.  The Bicycle Board's function in this process would be to target appropriate places to put these shelters based on a well-developed bicycle route plan that takes into consideration places that intersect with Mountain Line's routes.  David Bruffy is interested in working with people that can provide GPS data.  This data can easily be overlayed on existing Mountain Line maps.  There are even plans for this fiscal year of setting up electronic kiosks that will give people access to these maps.  I told David I would take this up with the Mapping Committee, and your committee can subsequently work with him on the specifics.

The nice part about this is that Mountain Line, itself, works with the City, and they have already built approved shelters from local sources as well as from commercial suppliers.  The BB's part would simply be to define the best locations, and Mountain Line will do the brunt of the rest of the work.  I am very excited about this, to say the least.

Ryan Post from WVU Cycling expressed an interest in helping with this process.  Other names of interest include Will Ravenscroft who has been working on a really nice high resolution connector trail map.  Also, Don Dickerson and Tyler Pearson have been involved with the mapping committee.  I'll send you all their emails to get the process rolling.

There is much more I could say about today's meeting, for instance, the acceptable types of racks the BB would approve for inclusion in such shelters via our in-development Parking Plan, but I will leave that for another email.

Derek,

Thanks for taking the initiative on this!

Back around February, Autumn brought to the BB meeting a map with bike routes on it.  My impression was that it was pretty near completion.  If you could find that file, it would be a good place to start.

FYI, tomorrow, Don Spencer, Greg Good and I are meeting with the City Manager and the City Engineer for what I hope is the last step to getting shared lane markings (SLM), Bicycles May Use Full Lane signs and Share the Road signs installed around the City.  The attached file lists the locations.  Steve Harouff marked up a paper map that the WVDOH gave us to indicate the locations.  He may have done some work digitizing the locations.  Please coordinate with him.

The purpose of the SLMs and signs is not to establish bike routes but rather to soften barriers to bicycle travel on obvious good transportation routes, e.g. University Avenue.  The reason I bring the SLMs and signs up is that we need to keep an integrated infrastructure perspective so we don't create conflicts and confuse cyclists and motorists.  I would imagine that besides producing a bike route map, we'll want to sign the bike routes so we should have one map, or at least a set of layers, in one file that captures it all.

Hey guys..  As I've stated before, I am interested in helping with GIS mapping and analysis for the Bike Board, but it seems like there are several of us who are interested or have already been mapping.  I think it would be great for us GIS folks to get together and figure out where we are with mapping and who has what.  I would like to start making contacts on who is willing to help with GIS mapping.  Maybe this would be more appropriately brought up at the next meeting?  See you guys next month.  ~Derek Springston
