I'm heading up with the kids Sunday morning...we could learn a lot. Ped board tried to organize an Open Streets, had support from downtown business owners but no commitment from Main Street. Need new events to support our downtown and the families that choose to live in the City. Thanks! Open Streets coming to Pittsburgh

Subject: OPEN STREETS PGH - Streetside E-News: July 2014
Sara and fellow SPC region participating trail groups and advocates,
As mentioned in the Streetside E-News that you received from Sara Walfoort there was mention of Open Streets initiative throughout the nation. Now we can count Pittsburgh in as one of them. On Sunday, July 20th, 2014, from 8 am to Noon, Pittsburgh will be closing about a half mile of streets and opening them up to the people. NO CARS, NO VEHICLES of any kind. The closures will run from Market Square, to Sixth Ave, to the Clemente Bridge and to PNC Park.
The streets will hold the first "OPEN STREETS PGH" event for people to walk, run, stroll, ride, skate, scooter, and just enjoy the streets! Festivities, all free, will include yoga, zumba, dancing, spinning, Burghman on skates juggling and spinning plates, music, Roller Derby Ladies, climbing wall, hoola hoops, chalk and fun activities for the kids and much, much more.
This is not a race, no start or finish line, no entry fee, it is all FREE for everyone. Come out for a fun Sunday morning and literally "PLAY IN THE STREETS" of downtown Pittsburgh.
Bring the kids, the folks, the grandparents, your friends, the neighbors and their bikes, trikes, strollers, skates, or just your walking shoes!

How to Organize an Open Streets Initiative in Your Community More and more cities are seeing the benefits of Open Streets. In 2007, there were less than 10 Open Streets initiatives around the United States. Now, there are over 100. On a recent Alliance Mutual Aid Webinar, organizers from Tucson,Atlanta, and Oklahoma City shared what it took to make Open Streets happen in their communities. Learn how advocates from three cities organized Open Streets »
