Suggestions sought to improve University Avenue The Morgantown Monongalia Metropolitan Planning Organization is seeking ideas for improving the University Avenue corridor. NEWS FEATURES Distinguished Alumnus named to Popular Science list Eric Loth, a 2008 inductee into the University’s Academy of Distinguished Alumni of Aerospace Engineering, has been named to the “Popular Science” list of 12 “brilliant minds behind the new energy revolution” for his work in wind energy. Institute for Labor Studies and Research awarded grant for innovative labor history project Unionized bricklayers across North America will soon learn the history behind contemporary challenges facing them as union members, craft workers, employees and citizens, thanks in part to the University's Institute for Labor Studies and Research. New disc golf course to open at Jackson's Mill A new disc golf course at Jackson’s Mill will allow 4-H’ers and visitors to experience the sport while learning about diabetes education, thanks to a partnership with Novo Nordisk. The course is the first of its kind on the Jackson’s Mill campus and will be used, in part, to help teach 4-H’ers and the public about diabetes and the impact that physical activity can have on improving health. HEALTHCARE Nursing leader tapped to head faculty practice and community engagement efforts at School of Nursing Experienced nurse practitioner and business professional Dr. Toni DiChiacchio has been named assistant dean for the School of Nursing’s faculty practice and community engagement. Marsh appoints three to new leadership roles in the School of Medicine Jeffrey Coben, M.D., has been named vice dean for operations, in addition to his role as associate vice president for clinical innovations, planning and operations for the Health Sciences Center. Laura F. Gibson, Ph.D., has been named associate dean for research, in addition to her role as senior associate vice president for health sciences research and graduate education. Mary Beth Mandich, P.T., Ph.D., has been named vice dean for professional programs. ATHLETICS 2015 football poster revealed Kickoff of the 2015 Mountaineer football season is less than two months away. West Virginia tees it up for the first time on Saturday, Sept. 5, at Mountaineer Field at Milan Puskar Stadium. This week, the athletic department released the 2015 football schedule poster that will be distributed to Mountaineer fans throughout the fall. Fans can pick up their own copy of the poster at Mountaineer Fan Day in August. Kwiatkoski named to Lombardi Award watch list Redshirt senior linebacker Nick Kwiatkoski has been named as one of 145 players from across the nation to the 2015 Rotary Lombardi Award as announced, Tuesday (July 14), by the Rotary Lombardi Award Committee. EVENTS Some African-American Arts & Heritage Academy events moved to new locations on campus Several events of the African-American Arts & Heritage Academy, going on now at the University, have been moved from the Gladys G. Davis Theatre at the Creative Arts Center due to problems with air conditioning. The updated schedule has moved today's (July 15) performance of "Voices from the Earth" from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. to 334 Percival Hall. The AAAHA Annual Talent Show at 9 p.m. is also being held in 334 Percival Hall. The Music Therapy Master Class is being held Thursday from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in 339 Percival Hall. Saturday's Annual AAAHA Student Showcase from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. will be held in the Gluck Theatre, Mountainlair. Mountainlair to host blood drive The Mountainlair is hosting an American Red Cross blood drive today (July 15), as part of its summer programming events. The blood drive will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Mountainlair Ballrooms, located on the second floor. Eligible donors must be healthy, at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds and may not have given whole blood in the past 56 days, or a double red cell donation in the last 112 days. Donors are encouraged to register to donate beforehand at the link above, however, walk-in appointments are available. Pink Party fundraiser to benefit Bonnie’s Bus The 2015 Pink Party to benefit the Bonnie Wells Wilson Mobile Mammography Program will be held at Bartini in Morgantown on Aug. 3. Doors will open at 5 p.m. with live entertainment beginning at 5:30 p.m. All net proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit Bonnie’s Bus, the University's mobile digital mammography unit that travels across West Virginia, offering screening mammograms.
