Good morning, WVU is working on its transportation plan. I'm forwarding comments that came from Positive Spin by way of Will Ravenscroft who is on our board. Will has also made the excellent suggestion that the university institute a bike checkout system where bikes are stored in lockers that can be accessed by students/staff wherever they are, using a swipe card for access and tracking. This system is in use in Lyon, France and is being considered in Paris. Response to the idea from WVU was positive. Seems like it could be instituted on an incremental basis, starting with a few bikes in a few locations and expanded as demand warrants. Nick

Thanks for your comments and offer to help, Will. I have looked at the Positive Spin web site and thuoght there were probably ways that the University and the orgnaization could cooperate. We do mention the Bike Board on page 9 but the plan is long enough, it's not surprising that the reference may have been missed.
As we move to a final plan and begin implementation, I'm certain that someone will be in touch.
Feel free to forward any additional comments or suggestions that you may have.

I am a member of Positive Spin, a local non-profit bicycle advocacy group and community bike shop.
I/we would be happy to give input regarding our commuting routes and suggestions for improvements.
Comments on the plan as posted on the web:
* I did not see any reference to the Morgantown Bike Board. * I like the idea of covered bike parking and bike lockers. * We are also currently exploring the possibility of free bicycles for use on the rail trails this summer and would be happy to work with you in this area. * We will soon have a certified bicycle safety instructor in our group who can assist with bicycle education and safety courses. * We have applied for funding under the safe routes to schools program in conjunction with the Suncrest Middle School. As part of that grant we would be looking at many of the same areas you mentioned as being dangerous to pedestrians and cyclists, noteably Patteson Drive.
I look foreward to hearing from you,
Will
