Bicycle Board Members,
Anybody want to ride around with me on Saturday and set GPS coordinates for 7 Bicycle Friendly Community signs?
I met with Damien Tuesday. We have 12 Bicycle Friendly Community signs.
3 of them are already up: 1. Mon Blvd. coming up from Star City near Coliseum 2. South University Av. coming into town at the bridge that crosses Deckers Creek just before the traffic light for Sargasso, Aldi, etc. 3. Westover Bridge coming into Morgantown
We're planning to propose the following (all heading in-bound towards town):
4. Rt. 705 between Mileground and Stewartstown Rd. 5. Earl Core Road (Rt. 7 Sabraton) somewhere between the I-68 interchange and the Hogback turn. 6. Willey St. after Hampton. 7. Stewart St. below Willowdale (tentatively 39.6419, -79.9503) 8. VanVoorhis before Burroughs (e.g. 39.658606, -79.963425) 9. Dorsey Av. just before Oak Grove Cemetery. 10.University Av. at city line coming from Star City.
These are tentative. We thought we should put them where there is a high traffic volume and a high likelihood that motorists would see them and increase their awareness of bicyclists and that bicyclists or potential bicyclists would see them and be inspired to ride more.
Thanks to Damien for making the attached map that shows the general locations.
Riding to each of these locations, deciding exactly where the sign should be placed and taking the GPS coordinates should be fun but the cycling may be challenging. If we see or think of better locations along the way, we can add them. (If Traci shows up, we might even ride around WVU.)
Saturday's weather is supposed to be nice but cool. Inevitably, we'll probably want to stop for some refreshments along the way and/or at the end.
I'm suggesting that we start at the Blue Moose at 11 am.
Who's in?
Frank
I'm sorry, but I can't do this tomorrow. I probably can Sunday morning if that works for anyone.

If you were hesitating to join us until we settled on a day, now the plan is to do this ride on Sunday, 11 am. Meet at the Blue Moose (or earlier for pre-ride coffee and schmooze).
As I mentioned, we're trying to locate the BFC signs where there is a high traffic volume and a high likelihood that motorists would see them and increase their awareness of bicyclists and that bicyclists or potential bicyclists would see them and be inspired to ride more. The MPO website has a nice map and table of traffic counts on selected streets at http://www.plantogether.org/Resouces/Maps_Studies.html . And, guess who made it! Jing Zhang:)

Thanks to Traci, Christiaan and Jack Barker (Monongalia Bicycle Club) for establishing proposed locations for 7 Bicycle Friendly Community signs! Following lists the locations and their coordinates. (You can see where the signs will go by cutting and pasting the coordinates into google maps or google earth but due to google inaccuracy, they don't always appear exactly where the coordinates say they should. It would be nice if someone could use another GPS device and verify them.) Rt. 705 between Mileground and Stewartstown Rd. (N39º38.810', W079º56.068') East Brockway Av. (Rt. 7) down from the Hogback turn. (N39º37.483, W079º56.770') Willey St. after Hampton. (N39º38.342', W079º56.217') Stewart St. below Willowdale (N39º38.521, W079º57.018') VanVoorhis before Killarney (N 39º39.588', W079º57.805') (or on the speed limit sign Dorsey Av. just before Oak Grove Cemetery. (N39º36.668', W079º56.996') University Av. coming from Star City. (N39º39.372, W079º58.602') (or on the speed limit sign at Jacobs & University) We started a little after 11 from the Blue Moose. The weather was balmy and during the ~3-hours we were out, we only felt a few drops of rain for about a minute. We rode 23-miles and climbed 2,467-feet to capture all the points (and to do a little urban exploration). You can see the route we rode at http://connect.garmin.com/activity/252367881. Each of us said it was fun but choosing the locations was a bit of work involving some riding back-and-forth, up-and-down and discussing pros and cons.
Thanks to Jack for taking the attached photo of Traci, Frank and Christiaan on Van Voorhis Rd. right after we settled on the location for the sign there.
