Hey folks, We haven't received any word on the the City of Morgantown's FY2014 Transportation Alternatives 'Enhancing Bicycle Signage and Facilities' application, but *the FY2015 WVDOH will begin accepting the Intent-To-Apply for projects is opening. * There is still the possibility that our FY2014 application could be funded, but in the event that it doesn't get funded,* I recommend we review our previous application, improve it, and resubmit.* We now have time to critique our work and hit a home run.
*Who would like to be involved in the process again or for the first time this year?* I believe it would be valuable to have a few new eyes on the application, but also have some continuity in the folks from last year as well. If enough folks are interested, I'm in too.
Thanks, ~Derek

Everyone –
The West Virginia Division of Highways (WVDOH) is pleased to announce the opening of our online grant application system to accept applications for FY 2015. For your convenience, a direct link to the page is http://dohgrants.wv.gov/Account/LogOn. As you know, the application process has two phases: an Intent-to-Apply (ITA) phase and an Application phase. A potential applicant must first complete and submit an online ITA for their proposed project. If the ITA is approved by WVDOH grant staff, then the potential applicant is allowed to complete and submit an online application. As in previous years, no paper Intents/Applications will be accepted.
The ITA phase will be closed at 11:59 PM on December 16, 2014. The Application Phase will be closed at 11:59 PM on March 16, 2015. Please remember that as soon as your ITA is approved, then you may begin work on your application. It is possible to complete your ITA, have it approved by the WVDOH staff, and be able to start work on your application within the first month of the system being open. Please check your emails and the system concerning your ITA/Application. It is the responsibility of the applicant to track the progress of the applicant’s submission(s). If you have a question about where you are in the process, please call the WVDOH. Please feel free to share this information with any interested, eligible parties.
As you may or may not know, the most recent transportation funding bill, Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century (MAP-21), only covered FY 2013/14. As to how funding will be available in FY 2015 for the grant programs, and how it will be distributed, has not been made clear yet. However, the WVDOH is moving forward with accepting applications, anticipating committing the funding as it becomes available.
As always, you can direct any questions to Rhonda Banks at Rhonda.C.Banks@wv.gov, or call 304-558-9606.

Please push forward with this application for improvements!!
I did attend the Pro Pedestrian, Bike, Place conference in Pittsburgh this fall and saw communities across the country making these types of infrastructure and signage improvements.
Modern cities promote bikes! I was on a panel with three mayors who didn't particularly talk about their own bike use, but are really promoting biking in Pittsburgh, Memphis, and Philadelphia. They are responding to huge organizations urging them to accommodate and push for biking for transportation and tourism.
These mayors know that to be competitive nationally they need to actively look at active transportation and it's place in the overall transportation mix.
I continue to low-key but visibly bike to restaurants, meetings and events when I can. Otherwise I just like to bike--both for fun and transportation. And to go eat at Apple Annie's in Point Marion with my family.
Supposedly we will have an official climbing lane up the blvd before the snow flies. I have high hopes but believe when I see.
