Thanks to Derek and Emily for taking time out of one of the most beautiful cycling days to participate with me in the Safe Routes to School webinar, Show Me the Money: Finding Local Funding Sources for Safe Routes to School.
Many communities ranging from states to counties funded their SRTS program with traffic violation fines. We should investigate the viability of that here.
Some communities succeeded in getting other funds for their SRTS program by inextricably linking SRTS to health. e.g. The Nashville MPO did a transportation and health study that substantiated the health advantage of non-motorized transportation.
Fostering stakeholder relationships, e.g. improving the linkage between school administration and municipal government strengthens the community's position for getting funding.
Some got very small grants, e.g. $3K from Advocacy Advance to support their planning and organizing to get larger grants to support their SRTS program.
Tomorrow, this webinar and previous webinars in the SRTS series can be downloaded from http://www.saferoutespartnership.org/resourcecenter/National-Partnership-Web... .
See you tonight! Now, to get in a little ride:)
Frank
