Gunnar, You are not being naive, you have made the understatement of the century. I was at the summit listening to the secretary talk. It was the kind of talk many of us have been waiting a lifetime to hear. Immediately after the transportation sec spoke Jim OBerstar (D rep MN) spoke. He's the original author of the transportation enhancements act (that produced the MEPEB money) and Safe Routes to Schools legislation. He's now the house chairman of the transportation committee. His quote that will live in infamy is "Any highway legislation that comes to me is going to have to show that it accommodates bike/ped use to get approval." (I'm going from memory here, you might want to search the congressional record for the exact quote.)
This is a very happy time to be a bike advocate. Positive Spin is in the throes of applying for funding to take us through the next year. We are looking for the places to ask for the funds the secretary talked about (block grants, etc). If anyone can help us we would greatly appreciate it, since I'm way out of my expertise (aerodynamics).
