Hey guys, Did the Bike Board finalize a set of symbols and categories for our Bike Route map? I'm still working on getting all of the routes in. We're aiming to finish up our Bike Route Map for the October 19th Intermodal Facility grand opening. The most challenging and time consuming part of finishing this map could be finalizing and agreeing on the symbols and categories for the routes we've mapped. Please, let me know what was decided at the last meeting. Thanks, ~Derek

Derek,
We had such a small turnout for the last meeting that we did not discuss the route map. Instead, we discussed what it would take to get BB members to participate.

Don,
When Derek finishes compiling the input that he received from the Bicycle Board members, we will have another Bicycle Board meeting to classify the routes and to achieve consensus on the classification. At this point, I expect we will only have the best routes identified, not necessarily the good routes or the not so good routes, and perhaps a few bad routes.
I know you want to have the map available October 19 at the WVU Multi-Modal Transportation Facility's grand opening and we are trying to achieve that date. However, unless we have Bicycle Board consensus that the map is ready to release, we will not release it.
In the meantime, we need to plan how we're going to take the electronic version and get it on paper in time for October 19. I think that is outside Derek's scope of work.

Don and Frank, I have been making more of progress on the routes within the last week or so. I spent several hours last weekend drawing routes, and I finished up Frank's contribution to the mapping. I've moved on to the other BB member's maps and a few fairly obvious routes that I've found that seemed missing. I'll be able to finish those up quicker than Frank's map, since he had the most routes! I am trying hard to get all of the routes drawn in by the next Bike Board meeting (10-1-2009). Then we'll have approximately 2 1/2 week to update the symbology.
Given the timeframe, I honestly don't know if the BB will be able to finish our symbology definitions, assign symbols to all of the several hundred routes, designate steep areas, etc, etc. As Frank stated below, I also am a bit hesitant to release the map if it's not a quality map or if the underlying data isn't accurate. However, even getting a basic map 'out there' could be great for our community. There's nothing saying we can't version this map and create a better one for release before next summer or earlier.
By the way, who is our audience with this map? Are we just displaying a large poster? Are you hoping to give out maps to everyone attending? 100 maps or 200 maps? I know Frank had mentioned getting these files eventually included on the city maps that are available at the Greater Morgantown Convention & Vistors Bureau.
I see my self having significantly more time over the next few weeks than I've had recently.
Your thoughts?
By the way, thanks to all who have contributed their routes!

Derek - My only concern at this point is that the map not include any short-cuts across prviate property - as some Bike Board member route did include in earlier submissions.
As a public map and a public project, we simply cannot handle that.
I am a commuter and transportation oriented bike rider and I would like to see what has been laid out. Things keep changing, too, on the North side of town.
