There are 588 applications currently on file in the active Generation Interconnection Request "queues" - see: https://www.pjm.com/planning/project-queues/queue-gen-active.jsp . My goal was to determine the number and MWs of renewable energy projects within PJM's active "queues", and what percentage of these are represented by industrial windplants. As of today, approximately half of all the project applications to PJM requesting a grid interconnection study involve renewable energy generation (about 288 of the 588 total requests). Renewable energy projects are fueled by wind, solar, biomass, wood, methane gas or hydropower. These approximately 288 projects represent about 28,600 MW of generating capacity - about 30% of the total generating capacity of all the projects that have requested an interconnection study within PJM's region. Following is a summary of the number of projects and their combined MWs of generating capacity for all "renewable energy" interconnection requests to PJM: # project requests MW % of total non-hydro % Solar 1 3 .01% .01% Other (tires) 1 20 .07% .07% Wood 2 82 .29% .30% Methane 61 332 1.16% 1.21% Biomass 14 400 1.40% 1.46% Hydro 17 1,059 3.71% Wind 193 26,647 93.36% 96.95% Total 288 28,543 Note that currently over 93% of the generating capacity of all renewable energy projects which have applied to PJM for interconnection study is due to industrial wind energy facilities. However, since every Renewables Portfolio Standard law so far enacted by states in the Mid-Atlantic Region and NC either currently or eventually will exclude most to all hydropower projects from being considered as a "qualifying" source of Renewable Energy Credits, the proportion of the combined generating capacity of "non-hydro" renewable energy projects in PJM's active "queues" that are fueled by wind is nearly 97%. The PJM grid region covers the entire Mid-Atlantic region and extends westward into northern IL - see map indicating the extent of PJM's service area via: http://www.miso-pjm.com <http://www.miso-pjm.com/> . I was intrigued by the PJM result, and decided to pursue this line of inquiry to all the other grid regions of the US. A very similar pattern to what I found in PJM occurs in the Midwest ISO grid region (see map of MISO's service area via: http://www.miso-pjm.com <http://www.miso-pjm.com/> ). The MISO region has over 65,500 MW of wind energy projects in their "interconnection study" queue, and wind turbines represents 99% of all the generating capacity of renewable energy projects so far proposed in this grid. In Texas, the ERCOT grid manager reports that there is over 35,500 MW of wind energy projects in their interconnection study queue - which represents 99% of the generating capacity of all the renewable energy facilities so far proposed. For south-central US, the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) grid manager reports over 19,300 MW of wind energy projects have applied for interconnection study - which represents nearly 100% of all the generating capacity associated with renewable energy projects in their "queue". Likewise, for NY and New England, wind energy projects in the interconnection study "queues" for these two grid regions comprise 6,800 MW and 2,100 MW of proposed generating capacity, respectively. However, wind turbines represents 99% and 85% of the "non-hydro" renewable energy projects in the interconnection study queues of the NY (NYISO) and New England (NEISO) grid regions, respectively. In contrast, for the western half of the US (WECC), although 11,200 MW of wind energy projects are proposed for interconnection study, there is in addition over 5,200 MW of generating capacity proposed for "non-hydro" renewable energy projects. Consequently, wind turbines represent only 2/3 of the generating capacity of all the "non-hydro" renewable energy projects so far proposed within this huge region. When you hear that "renewable energy" projects are expected to help satisfy our future need for electricity, you should realize this general claim overwhelmingly will apply to Industrial Wind Turbines. Except for the western half of the US, only a very tiny percentage of the electricity generating capacity of proposed renewable energy projects will come from facilities whose fuel source is solar, biomass, geothermal or methane. I'm back

I am sorry I stop participating in conversations and meetings. I became very sick (bronchitis) last week and slept for three days, the I was just sick for a long time!!! I am getting my life force back now and will be following up on everything. I see two very good articles in the current Sierran newsletter. Thank you Sally and Duane. I will read these articles soon. Also thank you Sandy and Rodger for getting the postcards our re: PSC meetings. The timing on that was perfect. I know we had a good turn out at the PSC meetings. Good job everyone for participating at the meetings and at getting others to attend. I need to get letters out to those who contributed to our fundraiser. Now, off to my myriad emails.. Congress will be down to the wire this month and next trying to work through a queue of important bills. We need to make it clear that passing a clean energy bill is our priority. This will require, more than anything, that we work the media (LTEs, guest editorials, ed-board meetings and public events). Contact national staff if you are interested in setting up an ed-board meeting with your state or local newspaper or engaging media with a public event. Please find resources at bottom of email. Regarding rumors of a broken energy bill There have been rumors that the renewable electricity standard (RES) and the tax bill passed in the House will be dropped from the final energy bill. This is not entirely true but it is ENTIRELY off-message. While we continue to encourage Congress to bring one energy package to the floor with both CAFE and RES, there is the potential for House and Senate to attempt to pass the RES separately in order to win on both issues (fuel economy and RES) since getting 60 votes in the Senate on both in the same bill continues to be a challenging equation. There has not been a final decision on whether to move an RES separately and we should continue to call for a final energy bill that raises fuel economy standards and establishes a national RES. We must raise expectations for Congress to get the job done, so please KEEP THE MESSAGE POSITIVE! Waste-to-energy should not be included in the RES If you are meeting with your member of Congress or have a relationship with a staff person, please let your representatives know that we oppose burning garbage for energy. Some members of Congress are pushing to add waste-to-energy to the list of qualifying renewables in a renewable electricity standard (RES). Factsheets on waste-to-energy are attached. Engage your mayor: Ask him/her to weigh in on the energy bill Mayors have been leaders in making our cities more energy efficient and in cutting global warming. URGENT, help needed

Fellow Sierra Club Members: I have pasted some information below which is extremely distressing because, first, Maria is my friend and, second, if something bad happens to Maria, we will have difficulty getting coalfield citizens to speak up and to testify in future litigation. In addition to the links below, Maria and her homeplace are featured in our yellow brochures. This is an extremely scary situation which we can't let Maria face alone. Maria has two children who attend school in the Bob White community and so we have to worry about their safety too. The miners have been showing up in the early A.M. hours and picketing her house in their fluorescent striped workclothes. There have been threats to burn her home and many other harassments. Any financial aid will be appreciated to enable us to provide 24-hour protection for Maria's homeplace until the help mentioned below becomes available. As Dianne mentions, we are keeping this quiet so as not to inflame more passions. Thank you for any assistance. Please don't hesitate to give me a call if you need any further information. Because of a lawsuit filed by WV groups, Judge Robert C Chambers recently imposed a temporary injunction which prevents a new, huge valley fill in Boone County from being built (for now, at least). The company says they couldn't keep mining the mountains unless they have this new valley fill to dump the former mountaintops into. We hear that 39 workers are in the process of being laid off. The valley fill would have employed these 39 workers for 12 months. Shortly before we won the injunction, an OVEC meeting in Boone County (Sept 19) was forcibly taken over by about 60 mountaintop removal workers, who crowded into the large room and made it impossible for others to get in. These people were angry because they had apparently been told that OVEC was going to take away their jobs, and that Maria Gunnoe, in particular, was to be targeted. We have not publicized this more widely because the threats and outright intimidation have been widespread and we are trying to promote calm. Some of the gov't authorities are involved with us, to help reduce the chances for violence. We need immediate help in continuing to provide the funding for people to continue to keep watch over Maria's home night and day - as they have been for over a month now. _We've been promised some bigger financial help but we_ _won't have this funding immediately_. So we've been soliciting private donations, and we now find it necessary to ask more widely. We need _$300 a day_ to keep Maria's home protected. *Any amount* you can contribute would be deeply appreciated. Please send to Maria Gunnoe at PO Box 46, Bob White WV . The mine on the mountain above Maria's house has already caused flooding that damaged her barn, swept away bridges connecting her homeplace to the main road and washed away nearly five acres of her land. Some of the washout gouged the land to a depth of five feet.
