{LWVWV} Observe the certification of the vote in your county
by League of Women Voters of West Virginia 02 Nov '26

02 Nov '26

Election Day is Tuesday November 3, and the certification of the results will occur on MONDAY, NOVEMBER 9. State law requires county commissions (sitting as the Board of Canvassers) to certify the final vote counts and address counting of provisional and absentee ballots. State law is very specific on procedures and requires the meeting be *open to the public*. *The election is not over until the work of the Board of Canvassers is complete, and we urge you to participate as observers.* A detailed explanation of obligations for the Board of Canvassers may be found on the Secretary of State website. Observers are permitted by law. What does an observer do? The LWVWV has prepared a list for observers to follow during the canvass process: 1. Was the public welcome to observe the meeting? 2. During your observation, did the canvassers find any problems with the election returns? 3. Did you observe any attempt to disrupt or slow down the canvassing process? 4. Were reasons stated for why a ballot is provisional? 5. Was there disagreement as to whether or not to accept a provisional ballot? 6. Were reasons stated for why a ballot was classified as provisional? If you wish to observe the certification process, contact the county clerk to advise you will be there and will be representing the LWVWV. The process may be very long, so interact with your local league to set up time slots. Any comments or observations you would like to make after participating may be shared at lwvofwv(a)gmail.com Undoubtedly, we all are exhausted from the election season but this is the final step in the process and deserves our attention!

Check out our new post! Did you know? West Virginia ranks last among the states and DC in immigrant population. Yet, our Legislature spent valuable time in 2026 on a new anti-immigrant law, along with many other immigration-related bills that did not become law. In June, LWVUS adopted a new position on protecting the rights of immigrants. Check out our new post! 2026 is an election year. Is there any better time to take a look back at our history, consider our origins, and assess how we got from there to now? The Federalist Papers were written to convince the 13 States to ratify a newly drafted Constitution. This new series will review the content of The Federalist Papers and their usefulness for today. https://lwvmorgantown.substack.com/p/federalist-number-one [image: composed Fed_1.jfif]

LWVWV Updates Summer 2026
by League of Women Voters of West Virginia 15 Aug '26

[image: LWV WV UPDATES summer 2026_html_abcdbb62c3414cbf.png] LWVWV of West Virginia Updates: Summer 2026 Please let us know your concerns, comments and questions by email: *lwvofwv(a)gmail.com <lwvofwv(a)gmail.com>* *LWVWV Urges NO Vote on Amendment 1 on November 3* The LWVWV Board has approved our opposition to Amendment 1 “Citizenship Requirement to Vote in West Virginia Elections Amendment.” The Amendment, which is on the November ballot, states “Only citizens of the United States who are citizens of this state shall be entitled to vote at all elections….” The LWVWV urges voters to reject this amendment as unnecessary because state and federal law already dictate only US citizens can vote in our elections. Informational materials are being developed by the LWVWV to further describe our position and to encourage a NO vote in November. [image: LWV WV UPDATES summer 2026_html_a6b4cc43b0114c34.gif] *Highlights from 2026 LWV National Convention* The LWVUS National Convention was held in Columbus, Ohio, from June 25-28. LWVWV co-presidents Lyn Widmyer and Judy Ball, and LWV of Jefferson County member Neal Barkus, attended. League delegates reaffirmed the League’s commitment to address the constitutional crisis we are facing. New positions on immigration, the separation of powers and religious freedom were added: - Protecting Immigrants / Welcoming Immigrants Position: Delegates overwhelmingly approved expanding the older 2008 LWVUS national immigration guidelines to advocate for the rights, safety, and access to services for immigrants and their families after entry into the United States. - Religious Freedom Position: Delegates voted to adopt Colorado Leagues' concurrence supporting and affirming the constitutional separation of church and state. - Defending a Democracy Under Siege Campaign: The convention formally accepted and updated the multi-focus organizing campaign (originally called Defending Democracy) to target voting rights, election protection, redistricting, individual liberties, immigration, and guaranteeing presidential power is exercised within our constitutional framework. *LWVWV Board Seeking Secretary* The passing of our long-time secretary Carline Shaw has created a vacancy for the position of secretary on our LWVWV Board. Our Board meetings are every 3 months and we meet by Zoom. This allows us to use AI to transcribe the minutes. The Secretary now must simply review these detailed notes and apply our standard format for minutes. Please contact LWVWV co-president Lyn Widmyer at *lynwidmyer(a)gmail.com <lynwidmyer(a)gmail.com>* if you are interested!

Check out our new post!* Learn more about the Executive Order attempting to control elections using the Postal Service. While vote by mail is rare in some states, (West Virginia is one), vote by mail is the principal method for elections in Washington, D.C. and 8 states: California, Colorado, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Vermont, and Washington state. *Thanks to Neal Barkus, LWV of Jefferson County. https://lwvmorgantown.substack.com/p/the-postal-services-proposed-rule [image: 2026-08-09 VBM-USPS.jfif]
