Bicycle Board Members,
Attached is a response to Dennis Bolyard's letter that I propose to send to the Dominion Post. Please use track changes or comments to indicate improvements and send to me. I plan to submit but 5:00 pm today. Sorry for not including the whole BB on my first response of yesterday that I sent to the Education Committee.
Frank D. Gmeindl Cyclists fare best when they act and are treated as drivers of vehicles
Letter makes strong points, but should start with the best stuff. People don't read to the end unless you grab them at the start.
I would start by supposing that we accept Bolyard's suggestion, then show that f bikes were taxed and regulated like cars, based on the valuation of cars by market value and weight, then bikes would yield too little revenue to be worth collecting.
Also strong case that bicycles benefit motorists and public by reducing vehicular infrastructure.
My two cents.

Frank,
Would it also be important to include the other benefits of cycling in addition to the ones you mentioned, such as:
-reduced traffic
-lessen need of motor vehicle infrastructure
-etc...
It may also be important to note that many cyclists drive their cars significantly less than the average motorist, but still pay the same proportion of vehicle registration, taxes, fees, and insurance that motorist who drive daily and for long distances. So, in effect, we're actually paying for a bigger share of what we're actually using than Mr. Bolyard and other average motorists!
